Now, I understand the hesitation of using liquidated plants. Most people commonly believe that herbs and spices have no effect on the body or mind, but millions of fellow essential oil users and I beg to differ. Before we talk about the specific oils, I want you to live in the following scenario.

Imagine coming home to the neutral smell of the dwelling you reside in. It provides no extra comfort, besides being where you spend ⅓ of your life, primarily unconscious. You may come home to fluffy companions or some less hairy creature, but find no solace in your mind without external distractions or stimulation. It can be saddening and put a real damper on your current mood–whether good or bad–from the events of the day behind you.

Sage has a mint and earthy smell about it, allowing for a deep sleep if inhaled before you rest your head on that now intoxicating mattress. Citrus scents, in general, have a very smooth scent that doesn’t sharpen as you inhale if used in moderation. Chamomile smells like a faint apple, crisp in the air and lulling to the senses when used in a diffuser. Most of these sleep-suggesting essential oils are effective if they are in the air for at least a half-hour before you head to bed so that by the time you are ready to sleep they give you no time to toss and turn like you may usually do.

Despite all these wonderful things aromatherapy can provide to you, it is important to note the potential side effects certain scents and situations may invoke. Allergies to oils may cause a large impact on your surroundings via you and/or others. For your personal safety, put a tiny drop of oil in warm water and then place some on your forearm. Wait for an hour, or until dry, to determine if it may cause irritation to you. If you are pregnant, research oils carefully as some produce increased blood flow and other physical side effects that may not be desirable in select circumstances. Make cleaning your diffuser a habit to avoid mold forming in the tank and before adding any new scents you are not intentionally combining.

As a final precaution, be sure to start your aromatherapy journey slow.
